Traces in the sandThis red-and-white atmospheric arrangement features distinct colours and strong contrasts – as well as sand.
The striking table decoration consisting of deep-red poinsettias and white candles is easy to make, even for beginners – and only takes a few minutes. The accessories: single stems from a rich, red poinsettia such as the “Prestige” or “Roman” varieties, a simple glass vase, plastic phials, bird sand, candles and bright red cranberries.
The glass vase is filled with fine bird sand from the pet store.
A handful of cranberries is sprinkled over the sand. The bright red berries can be found at the market or in the supermarket fruit and vegetable sections. They provide a harmonious and colourful complement to the deep red poinsettias. A simple placemat or small table runner of similar colour creates a more dramatic effect.
A modern touch: the poinsettia is arranged as a cut flower. Complete stems of the potted plant are cut and then sealed over a candle flame until no more milky fluid seeps out. This increases the longevity of the poinsettia, even as a cut flower.

The individual stems are placed in plastic phials filled with water and placed in the sand. Depending on the size of the vase, two or three stems can be arranged together. The finished poinsettia arrangement can be combined with another glass vase containing candles. Small mother-of-pearl-coloured balls add a playful accent to the floral and candle arrangements.
